Canada faces the triple crises of catastrophic climate change, growing economic inequality and Trump’s economic war and threat of recolonizing there indigenous lands. Recognizing indigenous sovereignty, we must work with the indigenous peoples to build a New Green Deal to protect our ecology from these multiple threats.
During this election, Canada needs a bold Green New Deal for Canada to mobilize the creative imagination and energy of our diverse population, institutions, organizations and governments to harness our vast public resources and capabilities to transition from excessive reliance on the US economy to a more self-reliant, more equitable economy driven by dignified work, using clean renewable energy and efficient public services for all.
A Green New Deal for Canada will create hundreds of thousands of well paid, family-supporting jobs in every community from coast to coast to coast. It will consciously redirect the Canadian economy from our excessive reliance on the American economy to satisfy domestic needs and strengthen our international relationships and markets.
The vast majority of Canadians want and expect our federal and provincial, territorial and indigenous governments to stand up to the US and take much more robust action to combat climate change. We can and must do both! Our governments must step up and accept their responsibility to lead!
Building a Green New Deal for Canada will require a coordinated effort by citizens, diverse grassroots organizations and movements, labour, business, and governments. A Green New Deal for Canada can and will simultaneously address our economic and climate crises. Working together, we will reap success and show our struggling American friends, by our living example, that there is a better, more responsible and equitable path forward.
We have to work with industry, business and indigenous economic projects in harnessing renewable resources including solar, wind geothermal and hydrogen energy. Developing sustainable economic industries in the north will protect us from colonial interest.
